You have to have a passport, which you can only get from your own country's embassy or consulate. You can't travel internationally without one.
When you travel outside the US, If you are a US resident, you also need to carry your green card in order to be able to return. If you will be gone from the US longer than one year but less than two, you must also get a re-entry permit before you leave the US. If you stay out longer than two years, you lose your residency.

you don't need a re-entry permit if you have a "green card". "Green card" grants you the right to freely travel to and from the United States. However, you cannot travel without the passport. If you have green card, that means that you are a permanent resident alient of US, but you are a citizen of a different company. You have a passport of the country of your citizenship. That is the passport you use when traveling.
