Don't know what part of the world you're in, so I'd say the one nearest the road surface as you face towards oncoming traffic.
Which, incidentally, would be the same side of you, as of the road they drive on. In the Commonwealth and Japan, that'd be the left; on the Continent and in the New World, generally the right. :)

depend which country your in, my advice is to face the traffic, that why they can see your face(makes them feel guilty, walk backwards slowly and use the thumb nearest the road (in uk left)

normally I would say the right thumb...but when I can't decide on something I choose both... sure it might confuse them a bit... but at least they get to see you don't have any weapons...lol.. ( PS don't borrow your neighbors E.T. for this stunt... lol)

well the right would be nice ,but then you do have a left one to and it wouldn't be nice to leave it out with out a consideration so you choose
