Atheists are united only by one basic idea: that there is no God. Beyond that, their beliefs vary widely. They are capitalists, rationalists, scientists, people of varied ideas and ideals.
Unfortunately, believing in a God doesn't make anyone virtuous, in the same way that believing in flight would make you a bird. Many people who profess belief in God lead depraved and wicked lives. Others who don't profess any faith often seem to act in very upright and moral ways. Morality and religion aren't necessarily related, as history has shown to great effect.
As an American, I believe that our nation's laws allow for citizens to believe or not believe as they choose. That's freedom of religion. It means ALL religion, or no religion at all if a person so chooses. So I support the right of people who call themselves Atheists to believe as they please.

To me atheists are people who claim that there's no God. I know that there are categorys of atheists, 'Strong' and 'Weak' etc.
To me, even before I was a believer, an Atheist approach to describe the universe was unscientific, dishonest, and lazy.
"Are atheists people without religion, without belief and morality, without conscience, etc., in addition to their lack of faith in God, or is it something different? Do they have a belief system of their own or are they just a jumble of God bashers?"
Intellectually lazy God bashers. They have a prejudged disposition, complacent in their ignorance, and comparable to the rednecks that habituate in the interior regions of the United States. Sorry for beating around the bush so much. lol
Yes they have a belief system, and I have posted with some that denied even that! Thinking that they were only reguarding science as their main source of knowledge. Nonsense! There hasn't been any lab work on God, He won't sit still for it. He would rather display His works right in front of them where He can prove that they are just the blind arrogant little meatheads that smart people can see them for.
"What's your understanding of this group of people, and do you dislike them or disrespect them for their thinking?"
I understand that they are the least understanding of the scientific community. The very label that they place on themselves declares that loudly.
Other than that I respect them like gum on a sidewalk on a hot day.

Wow ...I fell bad for atheists (See Laura B above, sad!) It is stated that 75% of Christians will loose there faith after the first year of college due to the lies in text books (some proved wrong well over 100 years ago and still are in text books and museums) I believe they have a tough time thinking outside of the box or what WE perceive as the only reality... touch, smell, vision etc.... They can not grasp that something exists on a different level/dimension. When you truly look at the facts and start from THE BEGINNING you can only come up with one answer and that is an outside cause that exists prior to and outside of our universe, a Creator?! It drives me nuts that people want to look at that as impossible and wont even consider it!! But when they consider the alternate that we came from a spinning dot that exploded turned to rock was rained on made soup and then things came alive and here we are today seems rational to them?
So do I disrespect them absolutely not, I wish they had a more open mind and could see the facts out there! And I don't mean things that are presented as facts (which is hard to decipher) but real facts ...no intermediate fossil's and just the fact that there are no facts that support evolution!

Just like everyone else. Their view of religion or their philosophy is their own. I respet their view and their right to have their view. Despite the name a-theist or "without god" or "no god", I don't think atheism is about a "lack" of faith or a "denial" of god. It's simply a personal belief system that excludes a godhead, central myths, rituals, scriptures, community, central ethics, or a communal distinction between sacred and ordinary. My liking has nothing to do with atheism and everything to do with each atheist I meet personally. Some have no respect for my religion simply because it's religion and they do attack it. Mostly, my experience has been a mutual respect of each other's right to believe as we choose.
Yes, some Atheists are Christian-bashers, but some Christians are Atheist-bashers. This is nothing new. There are people in every group who feel the need to bash others that do not agree with them or fit in with them. We call them bullies.

I think some people chose 2 b atheists bcuz they know that half of the world uses religion as a weapon 2 discriminate others and they probably think that's how being a religious person is so they just chose not 2 believe in God or any religion. If I met an atheist, i wouldn't try 2 change him/her cuz they have their own beliefs and u can't change people's beliefs cuz that ain't right. It's like forcing or brainwashing someone and that is total bs. I would just become friends with one instead of being their enemy or having one as an enemy.

I view them as lost sheep.
The Shepard (Jesus) is calling, can you hear his voice?
Athesists have a god, it's an idol. They worship whatever their idol is. It could be sex, it could be money, it could be their career...an idol can be anything.
I believe that many people that are atheists have morality and conscience...but being good will not get you into Heaven.
John 14:6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
People that don't understand or that don't want to understand...are lost sheep...when they have been told the truth (Gospel of Jesus) and refuse it. It's their "right." God gave them free will.
Salvation is free to everyone! Jesus is seeking a relationship with you. Did ya'll get that? He's pursuing you. He loves you...even though you deny him.
I don't dislike or disrespect them. I completely disagree with them. BUT bashing someone for their belief wouldn't win them over to Christianity.
Jesus taught about love.
Matthew 22:36-40
"Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" 37 Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'[a] 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'[b] 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."
Mark 12:28-31 One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, "Of all the commandments, which is the most important?"
29 "The most important one," answered Jesus, "is this: 'Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.[a] 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.'[b] 31 The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'[c]There is no commandment greater than these.
Grace to you and God Bless

"Are atheists people without religion, without belief and morality, without conscience, etc."
Yes, no, and no.
The definition of an atheist is one without a religion/god/belief system/etc.
An atheist is not necessarily without morals or conscience. In fact, a moral atheist is arguably more moral than a moral God-fearing Christian. The atheist is moral because he feels it's right. The God-fearing Christian is moral because he wants to avoid Hell. If the God-fearing Christian was without his god, then his morals would revert to what he really is.
And atheists do not have a belief system. Well, not a shared belief system. Many atheists are Buddhists and humanists. So, clearly, an atheist is not necessarily without a belief system. But not all of them have a structured life.

It depends on the atheist. C.S. Lewis at some point in an Irish bar with J.R.R. Tolkein, was a very strong atheist. I think he was actually raised in a religious home.
He had lost his faith, if that is true. The atheist with disappointment because real life smacked them in the face, are far removed from the atheist that never had a faith.
I have respect for those that do "become" atheists, but my heart bleeds for them. Those atheists that are God-bashers from the beginning; I pray for them.
C.S. Lewis became one of the most God-loving people I've ever heard of.

As an Atheist for me I do not believe in god, I do not feel that there is a need to believe in god and no need to go to and belong to a religious denomination.
Not all are god bashers but when most of us bring up our ideas or how we view this god, the religious people will view it as bashing and falsely say that about us.
We have morals, we know right from wrong and we have a conscience.
One does not need to believe in god or belong to a church to be a good person.

Some are without conscience, most probably arn't. Just like the rest of society. Yeah they have a belief, their belief is that there is no God. I don't dislike them, or disrespect them, I just think their opinions about God are opposite from mine. I think after this life is over they will bow to their knees in front of our Savior and ask for forgiveness for not believing in him.
