What was up with him?

I know you have to let go of the past. But whenever this guy that I used to date comes up on my mind, I always wonder why he gave me carnations on the first date instead of roses. I always get roses from my dates! Oh, on the second date he gave me roses.
Butwhy did he give me carnations on the first date, was he just broke or what.
