Moses lead the Israelites most of the time. But because of one mistake done on the heat of the moment, the Lord became angry and said that he will only see the promised land from a distance but not enter it. He died towards the last lap when the Israelites were close to Caanan, the promised land. Joshua took over from Moses, after his death and lead them into the promised land.

Moses dies shortly before the end of the 40th year. Joshua takes them over Jordan.

Joshua died after Moses, because Moses died before he got into the promised land. Joshua led the Hebrews into the promised land.
