Tithing is the paying of one tenth of our increase into the treasury of the Church. It began with Abraham, continued under the law and received Christ's approval. Giving differs from and is in addition to tithing. Both are part of God's plan to finance His work on earth. Read Genesis 14:18-20; 28:20-22; Malachi 3:10; Matthew 23:23; Luke 1 1:42; 1 Corinthians 1 6:2; 2 Corinthians 9:6-9; Hebrews 7:1-21.

Not obligated to tithe 10% to the church but only to GOD. Some Christians that I have encounter don't tithe at all because they only study the New Testament.

Well its been set up everysince Melchizedek in Genesis that 10% yo God is a good thing to do. There are statements in teh New Testement saying that tithing is important. But at the same time any church that enforces giving of 10% is not a church to attend.

No, the tithe is an Old Testament law that Christians have been freed from being required to keep. A Christian is supposed to be open to the leading of the Holy Spirit and to give cheefully whatever amount they decide to give.

However, many Christians feel that 10 percent is too little to give when they consider how much God has done for them and that He will meet all of their needs as they faithfully steward the resources He makes available to them to support his Kingdom work here on earth.

2 Corinthians 9:6 Remember this: The person who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the person who sows generously will also reap generously. 7 Each of you must give what you have decided in your heart, not with regret or under compulsion, since God loves a cheerful giver. 8 Besides, God is able to make every blessing of yours overflow for you, so that in every situation you will always have all you need for any good work. 9 As it is written, "He scatters everywhere and gives to the poor; his righteousness lasts forever." 10 Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread to eat will also supply you with seed and multiply it and enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. 11 In every way you will grow richer and become even more generous, and this will produce thanksgiving to God because of us.

"Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse: for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

The principal of tithing is a commandment with a promise. The harder to pay a full tithe, the greater the faith. If it opens the windows of heaven, I'll do it.

Whatever we have on this earth is actually belong to God. We are only a steward of it. In this case money that we have actually belong to God. He entrusts us some for our enjoyment.

Here is a verse from Luke 6:38

Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

By all means give 10% if you want and can. If you want to give and can give more, do that!

The church will use that money for the ministry.

Actually it is easier to give money away than to give the time and energy to care for the needy. That is doing the ministry.

If you don't have money, you can give your love through the ministry. So, the 10% translate into your income not only in term of money, but also time and energy and love that God gives you.

Lastly, I just want to remind that we can give or love, because God first loves us. Without that fact, we can do nothing!

In certain churches it's a requirement of membership.

As a Catholic, I have no such obligation. I just need to live the faith and attend mass regularly. Gifts are from the heart and not from obligation or contract.
