most scholars say men r not allowed to shave their beard. the main reason is that Allah commanded it (i think its more in the hadiths than in the Qur'an). muslims r supposed to look different from other ppl. they have to be instantly recognized as a person who submits to Allah. thats why women wear a scarf. also most men shave their beard for materialistic reasons and that is not right. u r not supposed to beautify urself for the eyes of others.

No main reason. Guys during his time didn't practice shaving. It was common to grow beards.

It was cultural like most middle eastern men in his time, beard would denote seniority and commanded respect from the younger people.
