The compulsive buying could be linked to the depressed mood of bi-polar disorder. Sometimes you might feel like buying everything, and that you are on top of the world, and then you might cycle and get depressed.

Yes, it is a way of filling an empty space. It is like when people eat to fill their empty spaces or supply emotional needs.
Everybody got ways to scape or deal with depression. Some people deal with it when they over eat, others when they smoke, other when they exercise in excess
And I know compulsive buying is related to depression because I have a sister who does that when she is depressed. She is a doctor and when things are not good in hospital or in her life in general she buys lot of things. The last time she bought a very expensive laptop when she already got one.

accdg to a study conducted by dittmar (2005), compulsive buying can be associated with the identity-seeking problems and mood problems, hence, by using our minute common sense, it is somehow related to depression.

I would tend to think that depression would be the after affect of the whole thing... once you were broke.
