first off, British is more accurate than English.... It's most likely due to the Kingdom being under the Queen of England. Hence, English. British and Northern Irish sounds stupid. It's just dumb. Who would refer to the country as a whole like that ever? In, say, international football matches, the UK has been playing as the constituent nations anyway. Anyway, England is the dominant nation. Face it. Don't deny the power England has had over the world. It's a cultural thing--an imposed English cultural thing. Get over it.

Yes..it is such an old tradition in the US to refer to the UK as England.

Maybe because of the origins of the country. It definitely wasn't the "King George of the UK" being the focal point of a revolution...it was the King of England. Many little children start out with that in school, and have great difficulty losing the early phrase.

My guess is that it has something to do with your accent. The same thing can be said for North Americans. How many Canadians do you think travel to other countries and get mistaken for Americans? We look alike, sound alike, so people assume Canadians are from America. Maybe some people can't distinguish a British accent from a Scots accent? I can, but I'm incredibly intelligent, so it's all good. :D
