It looks gross, but it doesn't seem to bother him. His regualr vet said it was caused by hormones. Should I get a second opinion?

He might have alepica-x a common hair loss problem in dogs. My pom had it. My vet had me buy shampoo for doggy dry skin and Melatonin 3mg (you'll find it at most drugstores, Rite-Aid, Savon etc) 1 pill everyday for 3 months and said if it is alepica-x then his hair would grown back slowly with the help of the melatonin. If there was no chage we'd do testing but to try it first because the test are so expensive. It is also more common in dogs that are not fixed. So if your dog hasn't been altered it will also help.
I did it for my pom "Doyle" and now he's back to being the cutest 3lb chocolate fuzz ball ever!
Good luck

If the spot seems to be genetic or something then you don't need to worry about it. It depends how long it has been there. If he has had this spot for awhile and does not seem affected by it, he probably should be fine. You probably should get another opinion just in case, you never know if it will cause a real problem. It's better to treat it now if it's something serious.

Yes, get a second opinion. These bald spots are usually caused by ticks or fleas or some other biting insect. The insect bites the dog, the dog tries to bite the insect. Instead, it bites itself in its cleaning and grooming.

It's probably caused by over grooming from flea-bite. If your dog leaves it alone it should be fine, but if he doesn't it will need to be treated and covered. My dog developed a sore on her hip from over-grooming. I shaved the hair away from around the area, cleaned it thoroughly, applied triple antibiotic, and covered it for a few days. It went away quick after that.

IT MAY BE ALLERGIES OR AN ALLERGY TO A BITE FROM AN INSECT, MY CAT WILL DO THAT IF HE GETS BIT BY FLEAS AND I HAVE TO TAKE HIM IN TO GET A CORTIZONE SHOT, OR HE MADE NEED TO BE ON BENEDRYL OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. IT ALSO COULD BE MANGE(spelling?). I'D DEFINETLY GET A SECOND OPINION.

Definitely. If it's raw it should be covered. It could get infected out like that.
