I'm nearing the end of high school and I'm seriously, seriously considering the military.
Is it a good idea? Which branch is best? Have you had good or bad experiences?

Any help?
Serious answers please.

It is the best thing I ever did. I have a college degree paid for by tuition assistance, and I haven't even gotten out yet. I've been to several countries, not just Iraq and Afghanistan. I've seen and done things that most people watch on TV. I've been a part of making history numerous times.

The best training the military offers is intangible. Self discipline, respect, getting along with others, not burning bridges, etc... doing whatever it takes to keep your word, fixing a problem no matter how impossible it seems. Stuff the civilian world doesn't teach you. The civilian job sector will be cake once you get out.

Disregard edaily777's post. The Army NEVER says "oorah". And you don't light a match at night to read a compass, military compasses have tritium which glows in the dark all night. A lit match destroys your eye's ability to see at night and tells everyone within 2 miles where you are. Edaily777 is a wannabee turd.

Every branch has good jobs and jobs that suck. The key to choices is the ASVAB test. Do your research.

The military will transform you for the better, if you let it. But some people get caught up in the wrong crowd even after they get to their first unit. You can lead a jackass to water, but you can't make him drink. If you get in too much trouble or do drugs, you will soon be back out on the streets and whining and saying the military is BS like the other failures.

I would join the military. It's a good exprience. You can always sign up for just 3years or for 2. If you don't like it, get out. You also have so many option when you join. The Army can pay for your schooling for you. I would join the Army,if I were you. They have the best training, especially in the medical field. And they also treat there females good. But go talk to a recruiter and hear what he has to say. But I say join, and try it out. I did.
I also say join the ARmy, cause when it comes to training, the ARmy is where most of the other services goto for it. There medical field is the best. Yeah, the Air Forcehas nice housing, but the ARMY is redoing their housing too.
So I say if you want good training that will get you a good job when you leave the servie, the ARMY is the way to go. I have a few friends that went into the ARMY and now they have good jobs in the medical field.

Well, all i can say is that being in the Air Force is pretty awesome, but to be honest, the military isn't for everyone. As for which branch, it all depends on what you want to do and where you want to go in the world. Each branch specializes in its own thing, but dont expect to fly a plane in the air force (as only officers get to do that) or be on a sub in the Navy (women aren't accomendated on them). What you should do, if you are serious is call up your local recuiters and have them tell you more. All the branches share most of the same college and career benefits, but recuiters can get more into the good things about their specific branch

I retired from the US Army in 2004. I had a GREAT time, and would do it over again in a heartbeat. My brothers were in the US Air Force and US Navy, and they loved it. I have a cousin in the USMC, and he seems to be enjoying himself as well.

We have all received training that we are now using in the civilian world. I work in security, my one brother is in management / safety, and my other brother is a programmer.

Was the military good for us? HELL, YES! Is it a good idea? HELL, YES! Which branch is best? Well, everyone thinks that their own branch is better, and that's true. How? Their own branch has done for them what they wanted.

I recommend that you check with each branch (make no commitment), obtain their literature and READ it. HEAR what the recruiters are telling you. Things have changed since I left recruiting in 2000, so you need to find out who is GUARANTEEING what. Don't listen for promises, you want to see it in writing. That goes for when you get to MEPS as well. Remember, if it's not in written down, it's not there.

Good luck

I spent six years in the Army, my brother two and my dad 9 years in the Air Force.

Any branch is quality, from a personal development and technological education standpoint.

The air force and the navy are great choices if you want more chances to work in a super high tech world and not eat dirt for dinner.

I have a buddy in the USAF and his motto is "Air Force, in the rear with the gear". And he has steak and lobster for dinner.

In the Army it's "oorah!" and we have runny eggs and MRE's for dinner. You be the judge.

All in all, what ever you choose do your best and make sure you are the best soldier you can be. Be the best at reading a map. Be the best at sending a radio message. Know how to read a compass by matchlight. That way you know you and your buddies are coming home alive.

General Patton said it best, "You job is not to die for your country, but to make that poor son of a *$&%^ die for his"

Dispite the green eggs and MRE's I wouldn't trade those years in the Army for anything. I learned more about myself and what I can accomplish than I thought was possible.

Excellent. Go and do great!!! America needs great soldiers!! I think you could be one of them.

Ooorah!!

Joining the military can be a good thing. For one thing you can get training in the job that you want and also travel a lot. It is good to know what you want to do before you go in. If you want to be a office worker then fine just go in, but if you want to be say a doctor, lawyer, Engineer, then go for the Army Officer Program. They send you to College and you only have to serve 5 years when you are done. All branches are about teh same, and are starting to combined, but for me, I was Army, and loved it while I was in. Got a great education, and now I am a teacher.

The military is a big step in the great future,
but that future may not be fore everyone. Consider your personality and expectations for life. If you feel that they go along great with the military lifestyle and expectancy then go ahead. I am also seriously considering joining the military myself, and i am aimed for the Navy, but that's just me, consider what field you are more attracted too and go for it.

I feel it is an excellant idea. You will learn alot about yourself. meet alot of differnet peolpe and travel the world best is to it while you are still young. the branch that would work for that you have to take the asvab test whatever branch you score the highest go for that branch. For females it is toss between Navy and USAF. they treat the females alot better.
