Isn't it harmless to get dressed up for a Halloween costume party?

Because it's the only holiday that the Church couldn't entirely suppress and has no christian affiliation or comparison. And just as an interesting factiod, all current holidays have Pagan roots.

In Great Britain and Ireland in particular, the pagan Celts celebrated the Day of the Dead on All Hallows Day (1st November). The spirits supposedly rose from the dead and, in order to attract them, food was left on the doors. To scare off the evil spirits, the Celts wore masks. When the Romans invaded Great Britain, they embellished the tradition with their own, which is both a celebration of the harvest and of honoring the dead. Very much later, these traditions were transported to the United States, Canada and Australia.
Halloween is sometimes associated with the occult. Many European cultural traditions hold that Halloween is one of the liminal times of the year when the spiritual world can make contact with the physical world and when magic is most potent.

After reading this -- What do you think?----------Would Jesus dress up in a devil costume? Or would he "trick" anyone?

Because before Halloween was just a kids holiday full of fun costumes and yummy candy, it was Pagan ritualistic holiday. The eve before all Hollows (All Saints Day) it was believed that the cosmos seperating the world and the undead world (ie hell) was weakest and the undead spirits and demons could walk the earth. People dressed in costumes to hide themselves from the demons. The tradition evolved into the holiday celebrated today. Some Christians don't celebrate Halloween today because they refuse to celebrate a Pagan holiday. Pagans are often confused with devil worshipers and some Christians refuse to celebrate a holiday that (to them) is a big devil worshiping fest.

I've often wondered the same...and all i know is, some people are 'disturbed' over the origins of Halloween, and what it represents...

Even though many Christian traditions/holidays have Pagan influence - Halloween has always been considered completely taboo....

i don't think God will send someone to hell for dressing up in costume, nor do I think he'll condemn anyone if they choose to not observe this pagan festivity. I think Halloween is trivial.

I give out candy to the kiddies; unless ofcourse it falls on a Sunday...than the kiddies are flat out of luck, because I go to church.

God Bless.

A lot of Christians today are celebrating the Harvest. My church has a harvest party, and they say that if they want to, children can dress up in appropriate costumes, or outfits. They still want the kids to have fun but celebrate the harvest. Halloween some people think is the devils holiday. There are a lot of weird wacked out people in our society today. Even some schools are not allowing children to dress up rather they are having Harvest Parties.

I am a christian, but I believe that Halloween is a worthless, stupid holiday. If my children want to dress up and go to a supervised party, then will allow them to go. Trick or treating is out, though. If they want candy, I will buy them candy. I also don't think that kids or anyone should dress up like demons, witches, ghost, etc. etc. These things are of the devil, and people just make light of them. Also " Halloween" , came to America from Europe( I think) It is " All Hallows Eve" And it is completely different from our Halloween.

It's a pagan holiday but nearly ALL Christian holidays are pagan!! Christmas? Yup, the tree, the yule log, the giving of gifts are all pagan. Even the virgin birth is based on a older pagan religion. And Jesus was not born in December.

Easter? You betcha! The bunny, the eggs, and even the resurrection story are Pagan.

Christianity is essentially a religion stolen from older pagan beliefs mixed in with a few facts and some other made up stories. Don't believe me? Do your research, it's there. I used to be a Christian!

Because Jesus said not to mix yourself with "the world." And NO, its NOT HARMLESS. First off, its called ALL HALLOWS EVE celebrating the rising of all souls, which is a Pagan Holiday. This is NOT Christian in any manner. They don't even try to pass it off as one anymore. Another thing, the Bible says not to "mix yourself with unbelievers." So why would you want to risk you christian faith in following a Pagan spirit filled holiday? Why not worship with them the first day of spring or the Rites of the Moon? What, because its not Christian? lol, that didn't stop you on halloween, did it? SAME DIFFERENCE EXACLY, its just that you found an excuse to salve your conscience. That's okay, when Christ says "I never knew ye." You'll never know why because your so self righteous that you'll be blind. Have fun with that.

As has been said, lots of Christians think it's too paganistic for their tastes.

All that zombie/witch/voodoo stuff does represent paganistic and mythological stories or religions or practices, and they simply don't want it to be an influence on their children.

Think of it like pornography. If there was a national porn day, MOST parents would probably hide it from their children, not because porn is necessarilly wrong or evil, heck, you know, w/o sex the human race will die out. It simply isn't something you would want your children exposed to before they're fully mature. The same goes for Halloween with many Christians.

Halloween glorifies witches on brooms, devils,
begging for candy, throwing corn, eggs, pumpkins
at people's cars and houses, and other "dark"
side of life factions. If you think this is all harmless,
well go ahead and egg someones house. That's
why lots of Christians don't like to celebrate Halloween
as it seems to bring out the worst in kids.
