The birth of Israel (the nation of Hebrew people) began with Abraham, and his covenant with God.
Abraham lived before Moses-- and Jacob was a descendant.
Abraham beget Isaac
Isaac beget Jacob.
(Jacab beget Joseph... la la blah-ha...)

Birth of Jacob. He was one of the "fathers." His story is mentioned in Genesis (25:19), and Moses' story isn't told until Exodus (2:1). The nation of Israel happened a bit later, once the "fathers" could build enough families to be called the "children of Israel."
