Osteoarthritis is a type of arthritis that is caused by the breakdown and eventual loss of the cartilage of one or more joints. Cartilage is a protein substance that serves as a "cushion" between the bones of the joints. Osteoarthritis is also known as degenerative arthritis. Among the over 100 different types of arthritis conditions, osteoarthritis is the most common, affecting over 20 million people in the United States. Osteoarthritis occurs more frequently as we age. Before age 45, osteoarthritis occurs more frequently in males. After age 55 years, it occurs more frequently in females. In the United States, all races appear equally affected. A higher incidence of osteoarthritis exists in the Japanese population, while South African blacks, East Indians and Southern Chinese have lower rates.
Osteoarthritis commonly affects the hands, feet, spine, and large weight-bearing joints, such as the hips and knees. Most cases of osteoarthritis have no known cause and are referred to as primary osteoarthritis. When the cause of the osteoarthritis is known, the condition is referred to as secondary osteoarthritis.

Topic Overview
What is osteoarthritis?
Osteoarthritis is a condition in which the cartilage that protects and cushions joints breaks down over time. Eventually, the bones, formerly separated by cartilage, rub against each other. This results in damage to the tissue and underlying bone, causing the painful joint symptoms of osteoarthritis.
Osteoarthritis, sometimes called degenerative joint disease or osteoarthrosis, is the most common form of arthritis and is a leading cause of pain and disability in older adults. It most often affects the joints of the spine, fingers, thumbs, hips, knees, or toes. Osteoarthritis of the knee leads to disability in up to 10% of people (1 in 10) older than 55, and 25% of those (1 in 4) are severely disabled. 1
What causes osteoarthritis?
Cartilage, like most other tissues in the body, is constantly replacing itself as old cells break down and are replaced by new cells. Osteoarthritis results from the failure of cartilage repair to keep up with cartilage breakdown. We don't fully understand the cause of this failure. In some people, injury to a joint and a family history of osteoarthritis play a role in the process. Osteoarthritis becomes more common as people get older.
What are the symptoms of osteoarthritis?
Symptoms of osteoarthritis include:
Pain, most often in the spine, fingers, hips, knees, or toes.
Stiffness lasting less than 1 hour after periods of inactivity.
Limited motion of the joint.
Tenderness and occasional swelling.
Deformity of the joints.
Cracking or "creaking" of the joints, often accompanied by pain.
How is osteoarthritis diagnosed?
Doctors usually diagnose osteoarthritis by evaluating symptoms and doing a physical exam. Sometimes the doctor will include other tests, such as X-rays and blood tests, in the evaluation. This is usually to rule out some other cause of the symptoms.
What are the treatments for osteoarthritis?
In many cases, the symptoms of osteoarthritis can be controlled. If one treatment doesn't work to ease pain and stiffness, there are other treatments to try. Successful treatment often combines weight loss, exercise, medicines such as acetaminophen or low-dose, over-the-counter nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and education about how to live with osteoarthritis.
If symptoms are severe, treatment may include prescription NSAIDs, corticosteroid injections, hyaluronan injections, or surgery

This is an educated guess but it sounds to me like arthritis that occurs in the bone, or bone marrow, doesn't sound too unheard of. Arthritis doesn't always have to occur in the joints, thats just Rheumetoid. All it is is inflamation and could probably occur anywhere. I had eyeritis a few years ago, which if you didn't guess is arthritis of the eye.
