Use anti-frizz treatment creams or lotions. That kinda work for me.

OK, I'm not a hairstylist, but I have a lifetime of curly/wavy/difficult hair experience. You need to find a good conditioner, first of all. You can tell when a conditioner is good because when you step out of the shower after washing your hair, your hair feels soft and sleek and there are no knots in it. Your goal here is to not have to comb your hair. I like to use Finesse for curly hair, I think it's the best thing to use for the money, or if you're a millionaire and can afford $15-$20 for a bottle of conditioner, use one of those fancy salon brands. I think Finesse is equal to them, personally. If you want to part your hair a certain way, comb it ONLY while wet, within five minutes of getting out of the shower. If you comb or brush curly hair when it's dry or half dry, you only separate the curls, and that makes curly hair angry, and when it's angry, it makes you look bad. Then, you need a good de-frizzer. Don't use Frizz-ease or any other product made for straight hair, it will only make your curls goopy and droopy. Use a hairspray made for curly hair. I like L'Oreal pumping curls spray, myself, but I know there are lots of good ones out there. Put the spray in while the hair is wet, muss it a little with your hands, and then just leave it be. Curly hair can't be forced to be anything it's not, unless you are damaging it with flatirons or chemicals. Don't brush it, play with it too much, comb it or put it in a ponytail; all of these acts will make the curls angry. If you have good products and you let it do it's thing, curly hair will treat you well, and you'll look great! Good luck!

I understand your problem completely.. I used to have straight hair.. and about the time I reached 14 or 15, it started to get wavy.. and I had no clue how to style it.. and for some reason, my stylist only knew how to style it with a curling iron (like old lady hair).. so I had big poofy hair all thru high school.. I hate looking at those pictures. It wasnt until I became a licensed cosmetologist and started playing with products that I figured out a solution.
My hair started wavy, and it does get a little curlier every couple years.. so watch out!!
Is your hair layered? This will help remove some of the weight and make it look less poofy.. ask a stylist to give you long layers. If they make them too short or take out too much bulk it will be a giant puff on top and scraggly on the bottom. If you go to a supercuts or a great clips - they will know exactly what long layers means.. thats where I learned, and thats how I get mine cut. Otherwise.. tell them you want the layers cut so they hold the hair straight up when they cut them.. not out from the sides of your head.. that takes out more bulk.. it doesnt look good.. I've tried it on myself and had other clients ask for it.. and with thick wavy hair.. it will look like a helmet on top and thin on the bottom.
Buy a good moisturizing shampoo.. wavy and curly hair is usually dry. And something that is to help keep your hair smoother.. Sleek Looks, Redken Smoothdown or All Soft, and Bed Head Moisture Maniac are all good. Get the shampoo and the conditioner.
Buy a leave in conditioner. This has really helped my hair. I use a spray in because it is light, but you will be amazed what that little extra moisture does to help keep those frizzies down. I use Paul Mitchell Awapui Moisture Mist. This product is awesome because you can also spray it on your skin for a really light moisturizer.
Sleek Looks carries a cream for your hair. It is supposed to help smooth it out.
I use a mixture of things. I put them in my hair when it is still very wet.. you'd be surprised at how well product spreads in wet hair. I flip my head over, use the moisture mist (focus mostly on the ends, they are dryer), I use a little mousse (right now I'm using Paul Mitchell Sculpting Foam because it doesnt make you crunchy) and then I use a few squirts of a curl cream (I prefer Paul Mitchell Round Trip or Biolage Curl Defining Creme.. neither of them made my hair crunchy or greasy even if I used a lot.. my hair is always soft). Then while my head is still flipped over, I scrunch it all (squish it in your hands to create curls). when it dries it is still more wavy than curly but it is soft and frizz free, even on humid days. If I want more curl on certain days and I have time, I diffuse it. Buy a diffuser.. you will be surprised how much curl your hair might have.. and their cheap. Let your hair air dry quite a bit first.. or you will be at it forever. Then, when it is still damp, put the diffuser on your blowdryer and set it on high heat, low speed (I learned that from watching What not to wear on TLC). Flip your head over and Smoosh your dangling hair up to your scalp w/the diffuser. Keep going all around your head. This will add good volume..not the scary puffy afro kind.. and it will really bring out more curl than you realized you had. It will give your hair more volume from the roots.. instead of the kind that sticks out from the sides.
From one person with crazy puffy thick, doesnt curl but isnt straight either, good luck.. and I hope this helped.
PS All these professional products are concentrated (its not just a bottle of water with a little product in it) Start out with just a little dime sized to quarter sized amount of everything including the shampoo and conditioner... they will last you forever. Do not be scared of the prices.. a $22 liter of shampoo seems expensive, but it will last you 4-6months if you are only using what you need. Thats really only $4-6 a month, which is what you would pay on the kind from the grocery store. Only the kind from the grocery store usually has a lot of wax, a lot of water, and very little good stuff.

Dry hair? Can't help you there. But you can achieve a new look by taking the back of you hair into a discrete bun giving the appearance of a great layered hair cut. Sort of a short hair look.. It will look cute if you do it right and people wont notice what you've done if you pull it off neatly. Your hair will be short and layered wavy in the back like you spent serious cash to make that hot look.

Go to a good barbershop and have them cut it off. They will love to do it and you will be glad they did.
