Not only do humans become dependent on the nicotine in the cigarette they start younger and younger and they do not have the will it takes to stop or to get help. Also, they think this is cool and they are hooked. Just like any other drug out there! We are creatures of habit...They see Mom & Dad or another family member and at the time nothing has happen to them yet, so what is the harm.

People will often start smoking when they are young and think "This can't hurt me. I won't let myself get hooked on this." However, nicotine is extremely addictive, some say more so than heroin (and I think its quite possible)-- so when they then realize that they should stop-- they can't. And addiction is like having an itch inside your veins that can not be scratched, except by the substance you are addicted to.
if you don't smoke when you are young, you are far less likely to smoke while older. Also if you smoke at a young age and your body is still developing, you can develop an even more powerful dependence on it.

Some (women in particular) do it because it does burn up extra calories, and seems to act as an appetite suppressant. Others do it to help curb symptoms of psychosis, believe it or not. These are the ONLY 'benefits' I know of, in using tobacco, though.
Most do it because they are extremely addicted to it. The addiction is very difficult to break, and I understand that tobacco companies KNOW this, so strive to 'add' things to make their products as addictive as possible... Addictions speak much more strongly to us, than any knowledge of how harmful a substance might be.
Knowing what we know today, WHY would anybody choose to begin smoking, on purpose? The benefits do NOT outweigh the consequences! Plus, isn't it a bit more than simple arrogance, which allows a smoker to foul up the air of everyone around him or her? It looks like a total lack of concern, for everyone.

that's the beauty of addiction...it wins out over common sense every time..and trust me, I know..I'm a smoker.
it's the same reason alcoholics and drug users will sell their possessions to have money for drugs...or willingly lose custody of their kids...when you're addicted - that's your priority. Not that smoking cigarettes is quite on
that level, but you get what I mean. It's kinda like if you REALLY love pizza and then one day they find out it may lead to cancer....would you still eat it?

According to the reading I have done regarding hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), the brain, when it senses that blood sugar is low, will do sometimes strange things to level out the blood sugar in the blood stream.
Smoking somehow does this, therefore the brain demands (addiction) that one continue to smoke.

As a former smoker, I can tell you it is very hard to quit. It's very addicting, and most people will tell you it's the hardest habit to quit. When you smoke, you always tell yourself that cancer can't happen to me. Sadly, cancer is only one of the many illnesses associated with smoking, and it always seems to catch up with them sooner or later.

Because they are weak and don't have their priorities in the right order. Either that or low self-esteem because they don't care about themselves. (I'm an ex-smoker by the way. Clean for 6 and a half years.)
