It's a really good question. It's a question you might be asking here, for either of 2 reasons: (1) Things that are beginning to feel uncomfortable to you are happening, and you DON'T LIKE IT ; or (2) You WOULD LIKE a "closer" relationship with your boss, and you are asking it here to see how far it is appropriate for you to go.
In the first situation, your relationship is already too close, since you are asking the question. You must talk privately to the boss about your discomfort, and ask him to stop. If he does not, you need to go to his boss for help.
In the second situation, (where you want to cultivate a "close" relationship with your boss), you will need to leave your employment. You cannot maintain such a relationship and keep working there. If you try to do so, it is most likely that it will turn out very badly for you, and also, probably, for him.

"Too close" is a relative phrase, but anything other than professional is not really smart.
Be friendly with your boss/employee. Make friends somewhere else.

There is no boundary set in stone, because each person has their own personal 'space' that shouldn't be intruded by anyone else.
For some -- it is a very BIG space... and they dislike friendly touches.
For some -- (like me), I can permit and be comfortable with most bodily touching by friends, EXCEPT when it comes to my managers. If your boss is making you feel trapped or singled out for inappropriate reasons -- trust your gut, love.
There is no other advice that I can give you -- just listen and pay attention to what makes you feel uncomfortable. Voice it to the boss -- a mature adult can handle the fact that, yes... he is invading your 'space'. =) Good luck

when there is any reason to believe there is sexual harassment. Usually a physical thing. It really depends on the two people though cause you might find that this person is for you but, be careful. I was always taught not to be in a relationship at work. It makes things very complicated.

If your boss is asking you personal questions or favors, or if they are asking you for personal favors and telling you personal stuff about them, that's too close. Basically if it's not part of your job description, it's too personal.

When you start asking questions like this
When you start feeling way too comfortable around your boss
When you know people are starting to talk
When you fantasize your boss
When you start dating
When it gets physical
When it gets emotional
When you stay on a job you don't like... just to be around your boss
