Some really good answers here! I'll kick in my two cents though...
If you can't find what you need at the above stores try Big Lots furniture...They have really nice stuff for less!
Also consider yard sales and consignment stores (including the Salvation Army). Go at around 7am to get the best stuff and take your time. Many people want to get rid of some really nice stuff for dirt cheap! Moving and estate sales are the best when you can find them but make sure to get there fast as people know that's where the best bargains are...
Good luck!

Buy used furniture like maybe at salvation army or another thrift store and then for the couches/chairs make or buy some nice funriture covers. You can make them any color to match whatever and what's even better about having seat covers is that you can just throw them in the wash if needed. At my boyfriend's house he covered all the couches with queen size black sheets and you can't even tell the difference. It looks really classy for a second apartment and whenever the dog sheds a lot or gets the couch dirty all you gotta do is throw the sheets in the wash!

Depends on where you live.
Room and Board has good quality at reasonable prices.
www.roomandboard.com
Design within Reach also good, and a bit more modern.
Crate and Barrel and CB2. Seems to have good quality for the price point.
All three have retail stores in major cities (at least in NYC) and all have websites.
Good luck

garage sales, your classified section in your paper under furniture and the best deals is many couples starting out go to auctions. if you have a salvation army in your area, they hold auctions at their main store usually mon-fri. and you can bid on everything you need and want and get it for a fraction of the cost. i've seen couples fill almost a entire apartment for under 175.00 and thats every room.
