FWIW, the Army and Marine whites are referred to as mess whites and are reserved for formal dinners as a replacement for the civilian tuxedo.

The army has whites, the navy has whites, the marines have whites, the coast guard has whites and I am not sure about the air force but I bet they have whites. Now the army will be eliminating their whites in the near future and going to blues for everything.
