Yes it is normal for it to turn black. (although it doesn't always happen). I'm assuming this is a baby tooth since they are five. and probably a front one.

Anyway. Basically when the tooth is alive the nerve inside of it maintains the white color.

When the adult tooth pushes up, it disolves the root of the baby tooth on top of it, this kills the baby tooth and so bacteria can get inside what remains of the baby tooth and that turns it black.

Loose Tooth Turning Black

In order for this to happen, there would have had to have been some sort of trauma to the tooth such as a fall. A tooth turning black is indicative to a dead nerve. If it is a baby tooth and loose then there is nothing to be concerned about as it is going to come out on its own very soon. However, I would consider taking your daughter to the dentist and having an xray of the area taken just to ensure there was no damage done to the permanent tooth that is erupting behind the baby tooth.

I just had the same thing with my 11 year old. He is a wimp when it comes to his teeth. His last baby tooth in the back hung by a strand for almost 2 years because he would not pull it out. The dentist would not pull it for they would have to charge for an extraction. The dentist told him to keep wiggling it to make it looser to come out. If you can get her to do that, it would be a good thing. When it finally came out about 6 months ago, the whole tooth was black. It was because his adult tooth finally pushed it out and it was not attached to any roots, it was a dead tooth. Good luck, she has many more teeth to go.

NO, this is NOT normal. Children don't usually start losing teeth until age 5 or 6. Are they front teeth that were loose due to a fall? or are they back teeth that may have decayed? Is she in pain? You should absolutely take her to the dentist.

This may have occurred if the tooth experienced some kind of trauma. If the tooth was knocked loose in any manner, it's normal.

I don't know about black, but it should be a grayer shade than the teeth that are securely connected.

Yes, it just indicates that the tooth is dead.
