Since cats are nocturnal creatures by nature and tend towards the same habits even when domesticated and living indoors, their prime active periods are always at night and very early morning.
They like to sleep during the daytime, I guess as a holdover from their wild ancestors' behavior which was done out of necessity. It's always great 'fun', to have your cat decide to hop into bed with you and dance up and down on your face in the wee hours, demanding food or playtime.
For my cats, I tried to encourage lots of play during the day, and right before I went to bed, as well. Usually, this helped me get my necessary sleep. To some extent, you can sort of 'reset' your cat's inner timeclock a bit, if you stick with a sleeping schedule you prefer.

cats are mostly nocturnal animals....so they rest during the day so they can be active at night. they're like this by nature. mine go CRAZY at night and fly through my house but during the day they lay around in the sun, on my bed or in a box or something only getting up to eat or use the litter box.

Adult cats will sleep 16 to 18 hours a day. The remainder is for eating, playing, grooming and the litter box.

Cats are nocturnal, meaning they move a lot in the dark. Here's some sites about them and being nocturnal:

This sounds just like me! Mostly it is because they are nocturnal creatures...and they experience the midday crash!
