you don't have to stop and say hi, i actually think a polite smile and nod seems more polite. when people say hi and they're doing something like biking/walking the hi can come out distracted and sound a little rude, but you can never go wrong with a smile.

It's a mission of mine to spread friendliness. I live in a very stoic area and they don't talk to strangers more than to give directions. I keep trying to bust through and show them that being friendly isn't a scary or threatening thing. I am finding the more I do it the more I get responses. So the people on the paths that I frequent are getting used to it.
It doesn't take much to connect with another person, a brief hello can't hurt a soul. Saying hi also cuts down on negativity. If you say hi to everyone, it will change attitudes throughout your community!
Peace

I find the best way to handle this situation is to go by their eye contact. If they make eye contact with you and seem interested in greeting you, then yes. However, if they're avoiding eye contact and look to be concentrating really hard, then no. It's also whether or not you feel like it. Ask yourself whether or not you are a person who would rather not say hi to people as you pass them if you are exercising.

I think you should always say "Bonjour" because: (1) you need not worry about "interrupting" anybody; it's plain courtesy to greet someone, especially when there is commonality of purpose; (2) we need to preserve and further French culture in Canada, even in Anglophone provinces; but (3) you can - out of pragmatism and convenience; or expedience or necessity - just nod your head.

If the person looks your way I'd say at the very least smile and nod. If the person looks friendly and not completely engrossed in biking then it would be appropiate to say "hi".

I say hi if there is eye contact as we get closer. Sometimes people are talking and they don't like to be interrupted. Sometimes I'm lost in my own thoughts and don't want to be bothered. Sometimes there are so many people, I'd be saying hi the whole time. My point is--it depends on your comfort level. No one is going to yell at you if you don't say hi first.

Clearly say "On your left" and pass them to the left. This way you don't scare them into jumping into your path. Any more than that is a little creepy, like the first answer.

If you're truly exercising, you haven't the time or breath to say hi to everyone that you pass. If you do, you ain't exercising. And most people I pass don't look very receptive to "hello's", sad to say. God Bless you.

If you make eye contact then yes. A simple nod, or how ya doing is very appropriate.
