Sounds like the tension sensor is tripping on the VCR. Does the VCR try to rewind the tape after it stops it? That can happen sometimes.
Try fast forwarding all the way to the end of the tape and then rewinding it again. If that doesn't work, I'd try a different tape. If no other tapes give you that problem, then I might suspect the tape. If more than one tape is doing it, then I'd suspect the VCR.
Try the same tape in a different VCR, perhaps a friend's?
It's shouldn't take long to figure out if it's the tape or the machine.
(And for all of you people who say to get a DVD... what's she supposed to do with all of her VHS movies, pitch 'em? Heck I have alot of old VHS stuff that isn't even available on DVD. (Personally I like the DVD/VHS combo units and you can get good ones for under $100!)
Good Luck!

All radiometric relationship methods are in accordance with assumptions approximately events that occurred interior the previous. If the assumptions are conventional as real (as is commonly achieved interior the evolutionary relationship tactics), consequences could be biased in the direction of a needed age. interior the pronounced an prolonged time given in textbooks and different journals, those evolutionary assumptions have not been puzzled, at the same time as consequences inconsistent with long an prolonged time have been censored. whilst the assumptions have been evaluated and shown defective, the outcomes supported the biblical account of a international Flood and youthful earth. Christians should not be frightened of radiometric relationship methods. Carbon-14 relationship is relatively the chum of Christians, and it helps a youthful earth. the cost scientists are confident that the commonplace thought attributed to geologist Charles Lyell from almost 2 centuries in the past, “the present is the important to the previous,” is basically no longer valid for an earth historic previous of thousands and thousands or billions of years. an option interpretation of the carbon-14 archives is that the earth skilled a international flood disaster which laid down lots of the rock strata and fossils.... regardless of the source of the carbon-14, its presence in almost each pattern examined international is a robust challenge to an historical age. Carbon-14 archives is now firmly on the component of the extra youthful-earth view of historic previous.10

I have used tapes that haven't played in 10 years with no problems. But the tapes can get pretty dirty and dusty. If the machine is having problems playing all of your tapes, get it serviced if you can find anyone who still does that.
On second thought, you can almost by a new machine for what a service man costs.

It's trying to tell you to buy a DVD player. It's also trying to tell you to have your VHS tapes converted to DVD.

Maybe it's mad because you havent used it in a year.
You might try one of those cleaning tapes. There is probably a lot of dust in there.
