i am a christian and proud to be one. however i dont believe that any religion or religious book whether its the bible or koran can be taken for its literal truth. most of our religious books are filled with cultural, social and tribal prijudices and as long as we dont remove those wrong beliefs from these books God will never become a reality to us. when i read the bible i see how jesus called me out of these tribal customs and set me free. thats why i am proud to be a christian
dont you think people of all religions should do the same and join the 21st century as new children?

people call themselves Christians everyday. Big deal.

Your view and God's view, is hmmmm. 180 different.

I believe, I will go with TRUTH.

GOD IS STILL ON THE THRONE.

TRUTH TRIUMPHS OVER LIES, EVERY TIME.

Don't ever let anyone tell you that you are less of a christian for asking questions and forming your own beliefs! It just shows that your not a mindless sponge that absorbs everything your pastor says like many Christians are. I think that the Bible is the best source of information we have for finding out what God wants of us. Never the less, it was indeed written by the hands of man. I wouldn't doubt that these men had a hard time resisting the urge to add some of their very own beliefs in the holy book of God.

Two general things about Scripture: 1) The Holy Bible has symbolism in it as well as facts--many people have a hard time discerning symbolism from the facts. 2) Most Westerners have a different perspective of biblical stories than the way they were seen by the early Christians of the Middle East; in other words, some of the parables and stories are very hard to understand from a modern Western perspective. The truths are all still the same, but modern interpretations of biblical stories all too often are somewhat distorted from a westernised "filter".

Here is a direct link to the Bible page of my website. You may also find my testimony of why I believe as I do on the site.

While there are no inerrent copies of The Bible today, The Word of God may still be found in most transaltions, at least in the english I know, If... The Holy Spirit is leading the reading.

There is far too much of what you espouse going on today... What is called The message bible is a perfect example of the abominations that can occure when your proposal is carried out in this world today.

So are you a Christian in the literal sense or some other sense?
Even when Jesus talked against some tribal customs etc. was he talking in a literal sense or was it just metaphorical? What if--some verses really meant to be literal? And why do you call yourself a Christian when you suspect that parts of your belief is based on a book full of errors? If every verse is meant to be not literal(which is an extreme point of view and erroneous) evrybody won't everybody interpret them as his/her own whims and what suits his/her selfish desire?

No. The bible is the INSPIRED word of Truth to you and TRUTH doesn't change with time. 2 plus 2 has always equaled 4 no matter what TRIBAL beliefs you have and God is always God his rules are truth.

I believe the Bible to be the literal truth. I think that it is often misinterpreted without any study or thought. Some things are meant as symbols and people take them literally, when they are obviously and cleary symbolic.

But either way. I love reading the Bible and I believe it to be the sole truth. LITERALLY. I don't disagree with anything in it.

I don't believe in picking and choosing what I like and dislike in religions and only believing what satisfies me. The Bible, in some parts, can be real cut and dry.... people choose to put in their own views... I don't believe in doing that.

The Bible says that God is the same yesterday, today and forever. That's what I believe... it is just as real and relevant to us as it was back then.

I fully agree with you Megan. Case in point, all of the women answering this question are going to tell you that you must take the Bible seriously, every word, yet they work at jobs outside the home, spoil their children, and run all of the household expenses. If we are to take the Bible word for word, would they not be in the home, raising the children, cooking and cleaning and waiting on their husbands? The Bible is an exellent guide to live by but it can not be followed word for word. Inspired by God? YES. Written by God? NO! Written by man, therefore, FALLIBLE.

Revelations 22 18-19 is a caution not to add to or take any thing away from the scripture. Yes it was written in different languages and must be translated for those of us who don't read in those languages but we can't change what it says we can only trust in the understanding we receive from the Holy Spirit

Middle of the fence. Waiting for winds of doctrine to see which way you turn.

God's Word is His Spirit. You have to be born of the Spirit to see the kingdom of God, so you are spiritually blind and spiritually dead.

Forget religion.

Christ is the path of salvation.
Christ is the truth of God's Word.
Christ is the life eternal.

Joh 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Christ is the tree of life.

Gen 3:22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:

How could you be a Christian and not take the Bible literally? If Jesus didn't literally exist and cannot literally be taken seriously, why believe in Him? This makes no sense.
