The most amazing place to visit is in the FAR north section, not far from Crescent City and the Oregon border. It's called Trees of Mystery and will absolutely blow your mind! Google it and you'll see what I mean. ( www.treesofmystery.net is a good site, too). We stop there every time we're in the area, and never tire of seeing the sights there again and again. South of there are the mighty sequoias and many great places to relax and be amazed. You've just gotta see this place if you ever get the chance!

Well, there are so many excellent spots. I suggest:

Mendocino along the Northern California coast.
Sacramento old town and railroad museum.
Napa and Sonoma for wine tasting.
Lake Tahoe is beautiful.
Yosemite is a must see.
Monterey & Carmel. Drive along Big Sur.

Then there is San Francisco. Here are some highlights:

Alcatraz or Angel Island. Bring along a picnic and enjoy a nice hike. http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=468n. You may need to book a day ahead because sometimes boats are full.

The Ferry Building is a great place to eat and get things for a picnic. They have a wonderful Saturday farmer's market. http://www.ferrybuildingmarketplace.com/

You can walk along the wharf area. It is very interesting. Be on the alert for pickpockets. Enjoy an ice cream at Ghirardelli. It has an amazing history. http://www.ghirardelli.com/

Walking through China town is nice.
Don't miss taking a cable car. The lines are long on weekends so either go early on during the week.

Check out the Asian Art museum. http://www.asianart.org/
If you like modern art go to the SF MOMA. http://www.sfmoma.com/

Pier 39, Union Square and the Ferry Building are nice locations. Prices can be high so shop around.

Walk across the Golden Gate bridge. It can get windy so bring a light jacket.

If you are a student bring your student ID card. Many tourist places offer student discounts.

there is a lot of wineries around Ukiah, a great Train ride From Willits to Fort Brag and if you come over Highway 20 some beautiful Lakes and small towns to explore. If you go over 20 try stopping at a Place in Nice called the Shred Cafe some of the best food I have had in a long time. Doesn't look like much but it is great. Have Fun

Depending on how far north you're going you should check out San Fran. which is full of things to do, or Lake Tahoe which is nice and relaxing. Sacramento is a good stop, because it has good tourist spots such as the Capital Building and Old Sacramento. The view all along the coast is fab.
