Because of the Flouride. It is considered a drug and should not be taken in large quantities.

In fact, many in the toothpaste industry feel the new FDA warnings may be overstating the risks.

"Our position was that they went a little too far," says Clifford Whall, director of product evaluations on the ADA's Council on Scientific Affairs. "There wasn't really a need for the cautionary statement about the danger of poisoning if you've ingested too much.

"If children were to sit around the bathroom eating toothpaste, which younger children could do, there is not enough fluoride in the toothpaste to cause them any acute harm. That just doesn't happen. . . . If you tried to eat a lot of toothpaste, you'd throw it up."

While Whall concedes that poison control centers do receive reports of fluoride "poisonings" every year, he says the ADA isn't aware of any of those cases resulting in adverse effects. "It just hasn't proven to be that kind of a problem. . . . We didn't think you needed a label like that because it could unnecessarily scare consumers into not using toothpaste."

RE:
Why is toothpaste dangerous to swallow?

It is because of the fluoride that is in toothpaste, however, there is not enough fluoride in a tube of toothpaste for it to be lethal. Ingesting fluoride can make your very sick to your stomach and by swallowing too much toothpaste you could find yourself throwing up.

A little bit isn't dangerous. Ingesting some fluoride (like the amount in fluoridated water is good for you.) However, you have to watch little kids when they brush their teeth because that bubble gum flavored toothpaste tastes so good that kids would eat the whole tube if you let them and it could make them sick.

It is NOT the fluoride content, for most people. You notice that toothpaste comes in weird sizes now, like 6.2 ounces. They had to cut the size back and most brands offer a "large" size that keeps the amount of fluoride exactly under what would be considered a toxic dose by the FDA. By "toxic," I do not mean that it would kill you, but that it would just begin to make you feel sick.

Because most brands contain Fluoride which is also used as a rat poison. Look it up on Google if you think I'm kidding you. The accumulation, over time, can result in problems you don't really need if you just spit it out every time you brush your teeth.

Only if you swallow LOADS of it. You're not meant to, but if it was THAT dangerous it wouldn't be allowed on the market in the UK or the US.
