Cats and dogs have glands on either side of their rectum that are called anal glands. In the wild they use them to mark their territory. Sometimes when frightened or if they become blocked the animal will release them and a musky smelling liquid comes out. If this continues to happen I would take your cat in and see if he/she is having anal gland problems.

Is your Cat fixed? Is it a male? Is it doing it all over the house?
If your cat is not fixed then it is reaching sexual maturity and it releasing hormornes (aka spraying) around about the house. It will need to be fixed in order to stop this problem. The carpet is another issue all together. If it is already fixed then it may be the food that you are feeding him or her or an internal issue.

Is it a male cat? If it isn't fixed, male cats will spray to basically show where their territory is. If it's an indoor male cat, getting it fixed should solve the problem.

all cats have scent glands on their back ends. males will spray to mark their territory and to let females know that there is a tom around to mate with. females will spray also, to let any males around know that they are in heat. if he's not neutered, you should definately get that done. it will cut down on the spraying, and if he's not too old, it will keep him from showing some aggressive behaviors. if he is an older cat, it will mellow him out too.

To set the record straight both male and female cats can spray. They can do this when they are scared or marking their territory.

Cats can spray to mark their territory. Mostly the males do this, but sometimes female cats will do it also. And, yes, it smells nasty!

Your cat sprayed, which smells way worse than regular urine. I would recommend fixing him, which usually stops it.

Male cats urinate to mark their territory. If it came from behind it probably has the runs.

Both cats and dogs have anal sacs. Sometimes these need to be squeezed. Ask your vet. If you have carpet you'll be happy you did. I ended up having to get tile because I couldn't get rid of the smell.
