I am so analytical it does my head in. I analyse everything and find drink and/or drugs of little help and sometimes make things worse. Attention to detail like you wouldn't believe and just wish I could chill and go with flow. Keep analysing myself, others, everything. Does that make me nuts? Any hints folks?

He, he - nice answers - some amusing, some just plain mean - you know who you are and I've reason to smile. Being analytical not always a bad thing as it can be the basis of greatness but also insanity. Just curious what the responses are....

Don't think I've got an answer to the question although it might be hard to provide. Some interesting comments/observations so I'll put it to a vote. Cheers

I think you may have a slight obsessive problem. Have you thought of therapy or counselling? You don't need to have a bad problem to have it but it may uncover something that you are covering up by obsessive thoughts? You know if there is stuff in your past that is getting in the way of the present.

Don't stop yourself being analytical; I think this is an asset if used properly.
A simple solution, give yourself a time limit and take whatever is the bets you have come up with, stick to that time limit. The time limit depends on how important/serious the issue is.
My job involves analysis and building analytical models; and I have deadlines. My problem is a degree of 'perfectionism' or 'narcissism' even since I analyse and analyse... My solution was to have a couple of drinks near my deadline. Then I just write up the report based on what's the best answer/model I have come up with within the time allowed. Now I find I can stick to the time limit easier.
To help you stop spending time analysing unimportant stuff say when is the bus or something, carry a book with you; pore over it, that will help you stay away from people's dressing, their t-shirt slogans...
Analysis need not lead to paralysis.
Use a good watch (and good books).

It's that word again, obsessive compulsive, we worry about having a perfect life, it's very common and now u are probably analysing why u analyse, if you think u are going nuts then that's the best possible proof that you are not, don't worry it means u are just a power thinker like some of the great strategists and philosophers, Churchill, Einstein, Stephen Hawking, Plato. Use it to your advantage and keep your life in check but try and find times to relax and chill with a beer and some cool tunes.

it s amazing how insensitive people can be to such a problem.Judging by the first few answers you got above mine, some people responding here take your problem as a joke, and try to be smart asses. However, as someone who s had to deal with your problem for a long time, i understand the hell over analytical mind can lead you to. It doesn give you a moment s peace and it consumes all of your thoughts and energy. Some things that work for me include just getting involved in daily tasks, around the house or with the car or whatever, but mechanincal tasks are preferable, and just focusing on getting them done, regardless whether they were done perfectly or not. My sympathies with your problem, i ve been living with a similar issue and I kno it can be mental hell, which isolates you at times from everyone around you. Also, recreational sports help a lot, or just jogging, basically anything that doesnt require a lot of thought is good.

Ok i think its a good that you find this kind of behaviour in you as being of concern as you think you over-analyse, but the thing is sometimes such skills are needed, i would suggest something slightly aversive but completely controlled, i.e. not even the remote chance of causing harm to you or anyone else either physiologically or psychologically.
what i do sometimes is that i try to lighten the situation and laugh it off, if that doesnt work then i'll plainly state what im thinking about.
i think its quite useful to analyse yourself from time to time, helps to keep in touch with you and your feelings, that also helps you grow as a person so i think thats not such a bad thing
anyway i hope things work out

Pretend there are a race of miniature people that are controlling everything; call them the 'hoi polloi'.
Whenever you are tempted to divine the reason something happens, blame the hoi polloi and ascribe the most ridiculous explanation to it.
Also, try to be more childlike; handle puppies or kittens, play board games, balance stuff on your finger, play practical jokes...
Recapture the wonder that once was your innocence.

I have the same thing. Maybe not as bad as you, but things are never 'just what they are' and people hardly ever 'just do stuff'.
Whenever someone does something annoying i try to break down to
his motivation for doing it
source of frustration
reasoning for his behaviour
etc.
Luckily to me its more of a fun game than a compulive behavior. But the downside is that its getting hard to get emotionally attached (friends / family / women) because i try to be objective over everything.
A break up is just that. A break up. I accept it and get on without understanding why other people would cry and stress over it.
I don't know how much we are the same, but my advice would be allow yourself to get emotionally attached to people. Be less rational and try to see things more from a philosophic point of view (rational, but not necessarily exact. opening enough room to accept things the way they are rather than the sum of their parts).

Just give the problem a lot of thought. It will come to you. If it doesn't, start making copious amounts of charts, diagrams, logic trees and hierarchical models. See if you can solve your problem with Object Oriented Design. There is a pattern here; you only have to find it!

There is a chemical in the brain called tetrahydroisoquinoline which makes you hyperactive. it is easier to control during the winter because there isn't much to analyze apart from snow if you are in the appropriate region on in the world
Google Earth doesn't help either
