As an assistant it should not matter if you are left-handed or not. Now if you are in the operator stool making a temp. crown or removing cement then you guys will do fine, as her stool position and tray position will be the same. But for assisting it really should not make a difference. Hold suction with your left hand and pass instruments with your right. What type of delivery system do you have at your office, over the patient, behind the patient, beside the patient??? If you have an over the patient delivery system, then you can still hold suction with your left hand and grab instruments with your right, if you have a rear delivery system then hold suction with your right hand and grab instruments with your left. You will do fine, you will be surprised how easy it is once you get in there and do it. Then you will be wondering why you were nervous in the first place. I worked for a south-paw last year, and while I don't assist, I did ask the assistant if it really mattered and she said no, that things aren't that different. The best thing that you can do is let her know that this is new for you, and guess what, if she is just out of dental school I bet she will be nervous too. Don't worry about it, she is human too, just because she is a dentist does not mean that she won't be nervous too. You have plenty of experience being an assistant for six years, be confident in your ability, you will do great!!!!

I worked with a left-handed dentist who had one right- and one left-handed assistant. He worked with both of them for over 15 years. Didn't seem to have any problem with either of them, although they did shift positions relative to the patient.

If you have been working with a right-handed dentist then you have been lucky as you are left handed. Did it ever occur to you that right-handed assistants who work with right-handed dentists have to use their left hands? So you're going to have to start using your right hand.... you'll adapt, just as the right-handed assistants do. If you can't adapt, then you aren't a very good assistant.

A dentist i work with is left handed, so she makes everyone work left handed with her. (dental assistant on her right)

Her bracket table is on the left side and all the equipment is on the opposite side.

Its kinda annoying coz everytime i have to go into work there i have to switch everything around first!
