Well, in Windows XP you can see the contents of a zip file as if it were a folder (with a zipper running up the folder). It is, however, still a single file that takes other, additional files and puts them into 1 file and compresses them to take up less storage space. This makes it easier to send the files by e-mail, for example.

A normal folder within Windows is just an organization tool to keep a bunch of files separated. The Windows operating system does allow compressing folders without zipping them (or putting all the contents together into 1 file, rather than all sitting separately in the same folder), as well, if reducing storage space is all you're after. You'll usually reduce space more, though, if you zip the files.

windows xp comes with unzipping software for free. However, zipped folders not only compress, they allow you to combine a bunch of smaller files into one file so it is easier to send to people via email or upload/download off the net.

To unzip zipped folders right click on the folder, then select "extract all", follow the wizard really really easy

Regular folders cannot be sent in their current form by email, only files can be, so a zipped folder is like turning a folder into a file ;-)

Also, please do no open password protected zipped files even it appears to be from a friend, this is how email viruses are sent to people and it looks like it is coming from a friend.

That is unless you password protected the zipped folder. Most email scanners will drop any emails that contain password protected zipped folders for this reason.

XP treats all zip files like folders because there are files in them just like regular folders. Of course, the files in the zip file are compressed using string replacement algorithm's, meaning that strings of certain characters in a file will be replace by 2-3 characters, reducing the total number of characters in the file.
Office data file are famous for being full of useless character strings that are easily compressed usually by 90%.

a zipped folder is a folder of archives that has been compressed to maintain reminiscence on your notebook/notebook. zip archives are commonly used on laptops which have much less reminiscence than computers. you will possibly desire to apply a zipped folder in case you had alot of archives/ a folder that has allot of things in, hence the content will take in allot of reminiscence.

The compressed or zipped compresses info, so it takes up the minimum amount of space and is easier to send, download, etc. To open it, you need an unzipping software like winzip (pc) or stuffit (mac). Both have free trial versions available.
