i am not so sure exactly how to answer this. i truly believe nursing is an art, not just science. and i think that the best nurses were born with the ability... i mean anyone can learn to do nursing tasks (start an iv, bandage a wound, etc.), but you can't learn the art of caring and that sixth sense nurses have about their patients that goes beyond their assessment skills. one quote i have in my office reads, "one does not need to be cured to be healed." i try to remember that in my everyday practice.

compassion and respect for others and yourself.
If you're lacking either one of those, forget nursing.
Nursing is giving others a quality of life they thougth not possible during their hospitalization or health issue problems. It's education and teaching too. Both of those qualities will factor in your practice as a nurse every single day.

Go out and talk with nurses about how their day was, what are some of the best times and bad times about being a nurse, and how they got there. Go to nursing schools and talk with the instructors too. They love an attentive student who expresses interest in nursing.

The essence is hard work and little pay and recognition, a sore back. And the hope, when you go home that you have done well taking care of God's children, young and old.

It is great, yet sometimes overwhelming. Nursing is not for everyone. My mom and I went to nursing school together, and she hates it, yet I love it. It just puts satisfaction in your day knowing you saved someones life, and some days, you walk out of there like"Why did I become a nurse?". It is definatly not for everyone.
