In the Marine Corps, a Staff Sergeant (SSgt) has three chevrons up, one rocker down, and crossed rifles in the center.
The Army Staff Sergeant (SSGT) has three chevrons up, one rocker down, and a blank field in between.
The navy equivalent is Petty Officer, 1st class (PO1) with three rockers down, some sort of bird on top, and the rate insignia will be in the field in between.
All of these are E-6 in the Army, Navy and Marines, but in the air force, it is E-5, and consists of basically four rockers down, with a silver star superimposed over the points of the top three rockers.
