Religion is a choice, a belief, an opinion! I dont believe in god, jesus as my opinion is it is a crock! I have read the bible I have studied christianity and all I come up with is God does not exist! I believe its a scam! If religion is so great, why is half the worlds trouble caused by religion? Why do people insist on living there life based on a book that you have no proof in! I make my own decisions! I am in control of my life!
I chose to put my faith in my partner, family and friends! They were there for me when I was down.. not god!
This is why I dont believe!

I found that having no religion made life easier, in some ways. Having no religion made life harder as well.
When I didn't "have a religion", I wasn't extremely concerned about the consequences of my actions or how my actions affected other people. I did whatever I wanted to do, which made life easier. I didn't have a strong social support/network . I had loving friends and family members. But....a lot of them of were flaky, unreliable, unstable, and etc. Not having a strong social support/network made life difficult especially in difficult times.
(I see this alot in others who lose a loved one or get sick)
Now I "have a religion". I am more aware of my actions. I attempt to not harm people, but also help others whenever I can. I act loving towards others even when I don't want to. Since my life has purpose, I don't want to waste it. I'm more organized and purposeful with my activities. All of this (and other things) makes my life harder. I have made many wonderful friends in church and by being Christian. (I never thought I would). I have a new family. I now have a very strong social support/network. Having this support and network makes life easier.

I guess it would vary by person but the 2 biggest reasons I can think of are:
1. Freedom - from moral responsibility so they can do anything they like and believe there are no consequences for their actions other than the immediate physical ones.
2. Confusion/Laziness - there is so much diversity and confusion in the religious world today that it would be hard to choose the right faith (and yes there has to be a correct faith because we can't all be right when we completely disagree) so many people simply choose no faith at all or don't take the time to study to find out which faith is following the Bible and which faiths aren't.

The biggest reason for not having or assume you mean choosing a religion is because the person can look at all the different views and beliefs out there and realize there is no form of PROOF as to which one is correct if any. A religious person would say you lack faith. Faith is believeing in something without proof, which all religions need you to have.

Many people don't conciously "decide" not to have a religion, it just doesn't occur to them. Religion is a tool people choose to use to make themselves feel more comfortable in light of all that is, ultimately, unknowable. How did we get here? You can choose to realize this is a difficult question, and use observation and logic to get as far as you can looking for an answer, or you can relinquish the fear and awe such a question raises, and decide to follow a book that tells you Gorinda did it, or Buddha did it, or God did it, or Allah did it. Religion is sometimes a useful tool, but it tends to be used most by the intellectually lazy and by those who wish to rationalize or justify their dislike for people who "aren't like them".

The thing is you have to understand that every person belongs to a religion. Even if they don't admit to it. Atheist believe there is no God and most believe in Evolution (the fairytale.) They just say they do not, they say they have no god when they worship money, power, sex, and/or any other numbers of things. They just do not realize what they're doing, and feel that they are above everyone else because they have no god. But, they are more foolish then us all because they will not admit that they do.

Religion causes divisions and does not unite. For example, Catholics and Protestants continually fight in Ireland. Take a look at all the anger, defensiveness and hatred in some of these answers in the religion section. It is very sad.

To belong to one specific religion, you have to buy into all of its beliefs, and some people pick and choose from different religions and experiences to form their own belief system. That is what I have done.

Some don't want to think that their actions can have consiquences outside of life. They don't want to think that there could possibly be a time when they have to answer for everything they did in their lives. They don't want to be held to standards that they feel oppress or demean them. They are only thinking of the here and now and not about what will happen later on.
I'm LDS, to answer your other question.

Some equate religoin with those who have misused "religion" to do whatever they want to do. Some of the most "religoius" people I have know are hateful, spiteful poeple and this is not what God calls us to be. If Jesus and the Bible are truely your Guide then God himself will bring you into all truth. Read for yourself and don't let your ministers do all the thinking for you.
