pythagorean theorem:

C squared is equals to A squared and B squared..

C squared = A squared + B squared

sorry for not using the correct sign for the formula i hope you got the idea.the program used in yahoo answers is not like microsoft word where you can use superscript in fonts... anyway.. C squared is C with superscript 2, and B squared is B with superscript 2 and A squared is A with superscript 2.

it depends if 68 inches or 164 inches is the A, B, or C, but usually C is missing on basic problems,and it goes like this:

C squared = a squared + b squared
C squared = ( 68 ) squared + (164) squared
C squared = ( 4624 ) + ( 26896)
C squared = 31520
C = square root of 31520
C = 177.538728

but if C = 164 inches , the other side is 68 inches ( either b or a ) regardless which is missing A or B, use this: ( Note C cannot be the 68 inches since C should be the biggest number in the given, so it can never be C = 68 inches )

C squared = A squared + B squared

transposition:

If b is missing:

B squared = C squared - A squared

If A is missing:

A squared = C squared - B squared:

using any of the two formula will yield the same answer...

A or B squared = C squared - A or B squared
A or B squared = 164 squared - 68 squared ( A and B are both 64 inches.
A or B squared = 26896 - 4624
A or B squared = 22272
A or B = square root of 22272
A or B = 149.238

meaning A or B is equals to 149.238

remember C is always the biggest value since it is the hypothenus, A and B are smaller than C because it is called the Adjacent and Opposite .

goodluck on your homework.
