It depends on your living conditions. If you have a respectable house and a yard, then a golden retriever is a good bet. If you don't mind a little extra hair to clean it's worth it. Goldens will love you unconditionally and forever. They are friendly to everyone, and can entertain you for hours. If you live in a smaller home I would suggest a West Highland terrier. They are small dogs, but they have a enormous heart. They think they are bigger than everything, so they will protect from anything! their white short hair is very maintainable and shedding is not a problem.

It depends on where you live...how much space and time you have for the dog. A dog that is not too small but doesn't grow to be too huge either, with short hair, good in all climates, and is not too hyper or agressive might be a basset hound.
They are good with people and children, loyal, smart and with the sad puppy dog eyes, who could resist? I had one growing up and she was wonderful. She lived for more than 16 years without having all the hip problems they say they have when they are older. Check them out.....hush puppies are hard to pass up.

Shiz-Tzu; the cutest dogs ever! And they're just as cute as they get bigger, which isn't that all much bigger lol!
I had a puppy Shizh Tzu and when I first got him, I literally could stand him up on the palm of my hand - that's how tiny he was.

depending on what kind of dog you had before, you should try sticking to breeds similar to the one you have had before so that you don't find yourself out of your depth with your puppy always research a breed if your not familiar with it and try to imagine it in your lifestyle and how it would fit in to your life.
other than that good luck and i hope you find the best pet for you
