JASMINE RICE is a specialty or gourmet rice with a slight jasmine aroma after cooking and cooks to nice firm rice. It is just slightly sticky when compared to Basmati, which is not sticky at all. Jasmine rice is grown in Thailand.
BEST USES:Pilafs, Side dishes, Plain boiled white rice
NOT VERY GOOD for puddings, burgers or any dish where the rice is not displayed whole. For such dishes parboiled rice or short grained rice is preferred.
Excellent choice when cooking Thai curries and Vietnamese dishes
CLASSIC THAI FRIED RICE:
2 Tablespoons olive oil
2 Tablespoons chopped onion
1/4 cup green peas
1 bay leaf
1 1/2 cups dry jasmine rice
3 cups water
salt to taste
In a large saucepan over a medium-low heat, warm the oil. Add onion and saute for 3 to 5 minutes. Mix in green peas, bay leaf, and jasmine rice. Stir to coat the rice.
Pour 3 cups water into the saucepan and add the salt. Increase the heat to medium and let the rice come to a quick simmer. Reduce heat to low and let rice simmer lightly and sit uncovered until all of the liquid is absorbed. Cover the rice and remove from heat, let sit approximately 10 minutes. Serve with curry, steamed vegetables and side dish of fresh tomato salsa.

RE:
What is the difference between Jasmine rice and regular rice?
I was in the grocery store today in search of some "boil in a bag" rice, and found that the Jasmine rice was about $.60 cheaper than the regular, so I bought it. I thought Jasmine rice was a better quality rice, therefore should be costing more. What are the differences? Which is best?...

Jasmine rice has some added jasmine flavoring. Some people think jasmine makes it better. I don't. I'd much rather have real rice instead of artificially flavored rice. My experience with artificial flavors like that is that you want to eat only one or two servings, then it starts to taste bad. Stick to real rice, in my opinion.

The jasmine rice I buy comes out very sticky so that it holds together on your plate. My family loves it like this as do I. So I've pretty much switched to just making jasmine rice now. I think it has more starch in it if it is stickier.

Jasmine rice is very aromatic and flavorful. As for "regular rice," I guess you're referring to white rice - which is just... regular. For more on Jasmine rice, check out http://www.therice.org/jasmine/index.html

Yep, Jasmin rice is a little softer, you know, finer. And it smells better, smells like Jasmine (sort of). And regular rice is just...regular. lol!
