some guy named Bobby...
there were two inventions that make up the modern bobby pin. The first just bent the spring wire back on itself with the ends bent out just a bit. The secant about five years later put the bumps in it.
The thing is I can not remember the names of either guy.

Luis Marcus was a manufacturer of cosmetics within the San Francisco area post WWI. In order to hold up the bobbed hair of flappers all the rage then, he invented the bobby pin.
