Okay, according to my brother-in-law, it is an instinctual thing. It covers up their scent so that they can do better hunting--though I don't know why a rabbit would just sit and not wonder why a "dead frog" was coming closer and closer...:-)

Scent is a dog's strongest sense. Your dog thinks dead animals smells good and wants to smell as wonderful. My parent's dog likes to roll in magazine perfume samples. Go figure.

I don't know but my dog keeps going to the creek in the back of the backyard and it has black sewer smelling water from dead leaves. When you find out I want to know.
Why do Dogs like bad smells?

It's supposed to cover up their scent, so no other animal can smell them, while on the "hunt". It's an instinct, bred into dogs from the beginning of dogs, when they had to hunt down and kill for food.

Hey BeCkbY, ever heard of an animal dying on your property and YOU don`t know it`s there because YOU have`nt fed or watered the dog in two days ? That`s the real abuse. Are you EDnas sister?

My 1st instict is why do you have dead animals where your dog can get into them?On the animal shelter shows they consider this abuse. Wild animals will use it and grasses and a number of things to cover their scent. You need to be careful because your dog may get into rabies or worse and then bring it to you. POOR PUPPY!

I've never figured it out. I suspect the stench helps drive away fleas and ticks. I know it helps me stay at a distance.
