Would you still hold him in the same respect if you found out you had to atone for your own sins? I am not sure if Jesus was of virgin birth, but I believe what was important about him was that he believed we can all live a life of goodness and get to heaven by getting in touch with the spirit of God. He made people understand that God is a force greater than the people who were in power at the time and that it was God they needed to pay attention to rather than the rulers of the time.
I am asking this because I think many people just like the idea of a free ride and would not respect Jesus as much as they did if they found out he didn't die for their sins, because this seems to be the focal point of being a "Christian."
So, what are your thoughts on this issue?

Ok. Let me get more specific. I meant that he died for the sins of those directly and indirectly responsible for putting him to death.

Also, I am not for anarchy, I understand the reason for things like taxes and giving to the government, what I meant was that he should not hold the rulers of the earth over God. This is added to clarify my point and change some of the answers I am getting.

I'm a Christian and it is NOT my point of view, I dont go sinning just because I can go and say "sorry" to God later on. I avoid sin as I possibly can because saying a simple "sorry" after sinning is not REPENTING if you knew that it was a sin before you committed it but did it anyway because you know of repentence, it IS NOT repentance, God knows your heart and only if you are truely sorry would He forgive. Christians= followers of Jesus, we avoid sin and do good (like J.C.)
And I'll always have respect for Him, I know nobody will die for our sake, I'm not even sure if I would. But Jesus did, and not only for those at the time but for EVERYONE! People from Then, Now, and those who are to Come.

Many good people died much more severely than Jesus. For whom they died for? For whose sins they died for? They died for nobody
and nobody's sin. But they died for some noble principle. If religion is for the welfare of humanity and if God wants peace and tranquility
among his noblest creation--He will require them to follow some laws and rules--so that it can be achieved. But the focal point of Christianity--that is atonement--doesn't serve that purpose. It is the most illogical belief system in the history of humankind.

The 4 gospels are excellent historical sources. We know more about Jesus than any other ancient figure. We must live a good life and believe in Jesus to be saved. Jesus said, " only those who do the will of my father in heaven will be saved"

Jesus never died. GOD raised him to heaven before being crucified, and put someone who looked like him to fool people into believing that it was Jesus.

Jesus said " Give to Caesar what is Caesar's and to God what is Gods." He expected the people to give to the government.
Your "what if" question is pretty lame. We can't live by "what ifs"
We follow Jesus.

I think that Jesus truly died because of the sins of humanity and the sins of his captures and killers. But really all victims of crime are being killed, raped, beaten, robbed...etc for the sins and trangressions of their victimizers.

Many of the Hebrews loved God before He sacrificed Himself on the cross so I don't see why it would be any different.
