Well that really depends...
Being honest and talking is a good start.
If you want to do something extra to say sorry, try and make it personal and something that you two have in common or that shows you put a lot of thought into it.
Anything that shows time, effort, and most importantly shows you are truly sorry, is the best way to go.

about what?? be more specific. You may just need to tell him and send him a card. Then again, if he is mad at you for something stupid, you need to politely and assertively stand up for yourself and explain it to him in the vocabulary that he would understand (not big words) :) IF he gets mad and defensive and you did not mean to hurt him and you did nothing wrong then he is trying to control you. Don't let him make you feel guilty. That means he won.

you know what worked on time for me? I made him a treasure hunt, with each clue very personal, like where he killed that nasty spider and we both laughed so hard, or where we kissed that one time, blah blah, you know, special places around maybe your house or wherever, and the last clue could lead to the fridge where you prepared him a cheese cake or his fave dessert. He totally forgave me after that one!

Don't show him anything,just say I'm sorry and leave it at that.People can be cruel about showing them your sorry.If they want to keep you guessing about whether they excepted your apology or not,they'll play little games to keep you trying to show them that your sorry.Just say it,if they accept it great,if they don't,oh well.At lease you said it.The rest is up to them.Don't play there games.

Sorry ladies, but I must admit, a sexual favor will almost ALWAYS work on a boyfriend who's mad at you, lol.
...that's not to say he won't STILL be mad at you once the good time is over, but at least you saw him smile for 15+ minutes! :)
