I know alot of people who smoke. I myself do not smoke. However, I have noticed that most of the smokers I know are pretty thin individuals. Does smoking alot suppress one's appetite?

Not that I am saying someone is better off being a smoker and being thin. However, could it be that overeating can be just as much of a health risk as smoking?

Feel free to tackle any aspect of this question you have an opinion or insight on.

Two reasons. A lot of people are fat because they have to have something in their mouth. It's a well-known psychological issue, and if you have a cigarette in your mouth you're less likely to be snacking on something. Second, smoking does a lot of damage to your body, but your body constantly tries to repair it. It takes your body a full 24 hours to repair the damage done by one cigarette. For most smokers, their bodies just can't keep up, so it uses the energy stored in fat cells in trying to repair itself.

I was a smoker for 10 years and I regret every single cigarette I ever smoked, although I put on 30 lbs when I quit (along with being pregnant) But, as far as I know, and was told by my doctor, smoking is an appetite suppressant. I definitely kept my weight down when I smoked because whenever I felt hungry I would go smoke and the hunger pains would go away. Sort of works the same way caffeine does...

smoking does supress your appetite and as some people eat because of boredom smoking replaces this compulsion and we smokers usually end up thinner but just as, if not more unhealthy as our eating counterparts. but hey, whether your crutch is eating, smoking or drinking, fill ur boots cos we all gotta die of something and i'd rather die of over-indulgence than a stress related heart attack

I think because their lungs are shrunk up and shriveled like raisins. seriously, I think it does suppress the appetite-basically if you are smoking your not eating-thats why when people quit smoking they gain weight.

yes it does make you less hungry and you just tend to eat less in general when you smoke alot if only because you always have something else (the ciggerete) in your hand

Tobacco use messes up your metabolism. That's why they are so thin. It's not so much their metabolism "speeds up", but their bodies don't work as well.
