Are they safe affordable and would they work for driving to the mountains? What model would you sugest? I can't spend more than 5-6 thousand.

Yes they are good cars and safe. If I were an 18 yr. old snowboarder I'd get an older Xterra 4 cylinder so I'd spend less on gas.
Xterras are great in snow, and they're great for snowsports. The 6 cyl. can be a tad thirsty, so get a 2000-2001 with the smaller engine.

get a JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE with the QUADRA DRIVE 4 wheel drive system. Its an all time 4 wheel drive system with the ability to go 4 low....plus it transfers the torque not only from the front axle to the rear axle, but if youre stuck and only 1 tire has traction,it will transfer the torque to that 1 tire

Sure, very good cars. Most are either front wheel drive or or 4wd, so get any one of those, and you'll be fine (Xterra, Pathfinder, Frontier, Maxima, Sentra, etc.)
