I went to the dentist yesterday and they said that I need a root canal... since then it has swollen up and is even more painful.. they say It's not infected but I think they are full of crap.... Should I go get a second opinion?

PS: it started feeling tender about 3 days ago.. what are the odds that something is just wedged in the gums or something? They did take x-rays and determined from them that it needed a root canal.. my girlfriend is adament that they are just full of total $hit and just want my money.

Your girlfriend should have told the dentist why he was full of it at your appointment.

She could have examined the xray and explained to the dentist why it doesn't need a root canal. You could always go back and demand to see the xray then get your friend to tell him why the xray is wrong.

Sometimes you can tell a tooth needs a root canal by looking at an xray because the filling is very deep and into the nerve. This will kill the nerve. A dead nerve will eventually become infected and will turn to pus and infection.

A dead nerve isn't always infected and maybe at your appointment the dentist obviously thought your tooth was dead or close to it , or he wouldn't have recommended the root canal. It sounds like that since your appointment things may have changed and it sounds like it might have turned sour now.

I would go see another dentist, one that has some good recomendations from friends/family, etc. I chipped a tooth, and I went to a dentist I usually dont go to and he said I needed a root canal, I then went to my family dentist, and all i needed was a filling! 3 years later, that tooth is fine!

anything is possible with dentists. one time you can pay them out now they want the whole thing at one time. could be that something is wedged in. take a little salt water in water and swish it in your mouth. that is what I do when I have a toothache. I would also try another dentist if it still hurts.

try oil swishing to get rifd of the toxins...save a few thousand dollars...and keep the dentists honest... Swish sunflower seed oil until it turns to white foam...every day for a week or two and break the the dentist's bread and butter.
