a few details that might help you, help me.
* i've played violin for several years, i've palyed piano for a few, and i'm currently teaching myself guitar.
* i have asthma
* i'm going to college to get a degree in music education (thats why i need to learn a wind instrument)
* i've palyed flute before (i got it to play- make sound- and a friend taught me Bb on flute... which i could play. basically, i picked up a flute and could instantly get it to make sound.).
so, which one would be easier for me to learn to play, considering all the above, Flute or Clarinet?
Thank you all so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well honestly to get a sound out of flute is not that hard, but what is hard is the fingerings, on the flute they are basicly simple liek a clarinet expect for intonation they add afew fingers down here and there to make it more balenced for you to hold, and for tunning. the claringet the fingerings are more straight forward and it takes less air to play then a flute sicne half of ou air that is blown on a flute is used. also when you get more advance on flute you have to foll in and out on certain notes as you are playing, while on clarinet you can jstu drop an extra finger or move it slightlyout or in or jstu by pressure in yoru mouth also higher notes on clarinet are easier jstu take soem practice wehre flute you need a whole lot of air, but my best answer fo ryou owdl be calrinet for the reasons you have listed, eaiser to learn better for asthema

Well thinking of the fact that you played the recorder, the Clarinet is going to more like the recorder than the flute, but you will have to buy reeds for your Clarinet and not the Flute, but I'm going to have to say the Clarinet is easier.

Well the problem with the clarinet is that you'll have to buy so
many reeds. You've said that you made a good sound out of a
flute so I think you should play a flute. I've played flute for seven
years and a piccolo for three. As for memorization, you don't do
any more than you would for any other instrument. Also, when
ever you play your scales as a group you play that exact scale.
Other intruments with the exception of the flute and trombone
you have to play a different scale.

Generally the flute is harder than the clarinet because of the difficulty in getting a sound out and the amount of air it takes, but the fingerings and other aspects are about the same. But I would say that if you can already make a sound on the flute then you should keep going with that. Good luck!

I'm a clarinet player and I love it! If flute works for you, go for it. If you can make a sound on a flute, great, that's quite hard to do your first time I hear. But if you have asthma- do keep in mind that the flute takes as much air to make a sound as a tuba (I know this is true- my band director told me), plus your arms might get sore from holding it up for so long.
Personally, I love clarinet, but it's your choice.

When I was in school, the flute section sounded SO much better than the clarinets. Based on that, I would guess that it's easier to play the flute well vs. the clarinet.

What level of skill on the instrument do you have to achieve??? You can play a basic flute (cheap one) that has the keyholes covered so there is no worry with having exact technique with your fingers... Clarinet has a LOT of open holes so your fingering technique has to be pretty good to cover the holes completely to get a good sound.
also clarinet has the reed issue and you have to learn to take care of and replace the reed.. I always hated seeing the clarinets and Saxes, oboes, etc... sucking on their reeds to get ready to play... just kind of grossed me out.
If you can make a sound on the flute already I would go with that.

Ordinarily, I would say go with the flute, as you already can do something with it. But. You're going for music education.
Have you seen the typical school band? Swarms of clarinets. Forget 76 trombones leading the big parade with 110 cornets right behind....
So go with the clarinet - each instrument has its pluses and minuses - and more kids will be needing to deal with the clarinet.
