Why Are Paramedics Called Paramedics

2017-01-19 13:15:56 · answer #2 · answered by ? 4 · 0 0

A paramedic is a trained medical professional who responds to medical and trauma emergencies in the pre-hospital setting ("in-field") for the purpose of stabilizing a patient's condition before and during transportation to an appropriate medical facility, usually by ambulance. Paramedics also work in the inter-facility transport environment where a paramedic will continue or upgrade medical care to a higher level while transporting a patient from one healthcare facility to another. Paramedics most often will transport patients to an Emergency Department, but "Treat-and-Release" practice can occasionally occur, local protocols permitting. Paramedics work through "protocols" from which they cannot deviate but may use judgment. Paramedics derive the legal ability to provide advanced life support care through a medical doctor's license. Paramedics can work for a city or municipality, a private company, or can be employees of a hospital. Some are volunteers.

Paramedics are like paralegals--they are trained but at a lower level than the maximum to be fully licensed by the state. Thus, a paramedic can administer first aid and emergency life-saving steps up to a point but only a physician can get into the serious steps. Likewise, a paralegal can perform legal research and case preparation but only an attorney can appear in court or advise a client.

EMT stands for Emergency Medical Technician. There are three levels of EMT's, EMT Basic, EMT Intermediate, and EMT Paramedic. I guess the reason we are called Paramedics is that we are the "para" meaning in between the hospital. We are the first responders and we are there to keep the patient safe, secured, and alive until we get to the hospital.

your funny lynnn.... parachuting....

para medic
para military
para legal
etc.

Any service that is given which is qualified under all circumstances yet does not as yet rate into the professional/higher class. However for all purposes the task at hand is/can be performed as well or even better than the person who as graduated with a higher degree. As can be someone in training but not always the case.

Also the profession that is giving the public service to before those with higher knowledge step in.

We are called lots of things by drunk, high, stupid patients. I guess everyone else calls us paramedics for a politically correct name.
