i lost a cat of 22 years and i understand what your going through.
TIME is the only thing that will get you through this. i know right now your hurting and you think that there's no way possible that your going to get over it but i promise that over time you will soon move on. you just have to remember how he/she was when they were alive. being that you said your cat was put to sleep.. was he/she in pain? if so you need to remember that and think now that your cat is feeling 100% relief from the pain it was feeling. be happy that its now in heaven and is watching over you!

Time will be the best healer. There are a few things that you can do now that might help. Talking to other people who love animals and can understand what you are going through can help.
Another thing you can do is create a memory scrapbook of your cat. Fill it with pictures of your cat. Write down funny stories and memories.
This one might sound silly but you can write a letter to your cat. It's a form of journaling. Of course you won't be able to give the letter to your kitty, but it might make you feel better. You can let out some of your feelings.
I hope that helps. Sorry for your loss. I know how hard it must be. In time, you might want to get another cat - but you will never forget or completely get over this one.
I've listed a couple of links that you might want to check out. One is a website where you can leave a memorial of your pet.

For the pet's lovers , it is very hard to get over the death or our beloved ones. But if your dear cat was too sick and old, you must try to understand, that he or she was maybe suffering too much, and that putting him or her to sleep was the best thing that could be done. You can feel better if you remember all the years of love and companion, that your cat gave to you. Time will go on, and someday you will feel OK. It is not a good idea to take a new pet home, not yet. I you are thinking of doing so, please wait for a time. You should give yourself a time alone. Good Luck!

I had a similar situation not too long ago, and I cried for a few days straight. It still hurts, but time is a great healer. I don't know if you're ready for it yet, but I think getting another pet is a good idea. Maybe not a cat if you think that would hurt more,.. but something to fill the empty space in your life.

I don't think that there is any right way to get over the loss of your pet. You should feel for it and be happy for the time u spent with it. It's normal to cry and feel bad, but it is being put out its misery. Pray for it and let it go. She/he will be in peace at last. She spent many years with you so rejoice her life, not her death. Good luck and God bless. From one cat lover to another.

I got another cat 5 days after my 1st one was euthanized. It's hard to explain, but the house just didn't seem "right" without a kitty in it. I still got sad when I passed her favorite places to sit or play, but that passed over time.

My family recently lost our dog, Fergus. My young daughters were devasted. We held a funeral, with the girls putting a letter in the grave and flowers they had collected. We wrapped the dog in his blankets and we all said our goodbyes. We then planted a special garden around his grave, and called it Fergus' garden. When we are having a bad day we go and sit in Fergus' garden, and it helps us feel better, just like when he was here with us. We pick flowers from Fergus' garden and put them in vases around the house, so he is here with us all the time. We miss him, but he will never be gone.
Sorry for the loss of your pet.

Honestly, get another cat with the knowledge that nothing can ever replace your previous cat. The new cat will keep you company and help you through your tough time.
