(sarcasm) That's great, you learn self-defense without a foundation on which to base it from!

Maybe the sensei wants to also see what you know and fights you right from the get go (only way he can beat up on someone).

Come on, you don't go to your first class with some preconceived notion of how to defend yourself. Neither do you know how an attack comes.

Not arguing about how good kenpo is (I'm sure it's good), but the methodology of teaching the art needs to be tweaked.

I don't believe there is one BEST martial art. I think kenpo is great. But so is ju jitsu, judo, muay tai and jeet kune do to name a few. The best martial art is to learn from all of them and incorporate it into your own.
