My dog licks his fur very much like a cat, pounces on objects and often sits on the window ledge, stares at hmself in the mirror, digs into the carpet as if its cat litter, and he enjoys slipping through small openings, its very strange. He's never come in contact with a cat as far as I know, so why does he act this way?

Some animals just have different personalities; my dog used to eat my cat's food all the time. My dog hates water as well. It's just an active dog being a dog. It is possible for animals to be influenced by another animal's behavior, but it's not harmful or dangerous. Don't worry about it, just laugh it off. I would find it rather cute. If this is really bothering you, however, just try weaning him off of these things. If you see him eating cat nip or cat food, just tell him firmly, "No." If you don't like him going in the sandy place, and you see him trying to go there, say "no", and lead him to a place where he can. Otherwise, don't lose sleep on it. It's very common and normal.

What breed of dog is he? Different dogs act differently depending on their pedigree. We have a miniature dachshund that has dug his way out of our backyard under the fence several times; makes sense since that breed likes to burrow.

He also licks himself a lot, just like a cat. Animals often have their own personalities and idiosyncrasies, just like humans.
