It could be built up product. This could be from you not rinsing your hair well enough or it could be the built up styling products you use. I recommend taking some baking soda mixing it with some shampoo and washing your hair scrubbing really well let it sit for a min or two. Then rinse really well and wash again with just shampoo then condition well. See if that works. You can also buy kelating shampoo but baking soda is cheeper. You should do that once every one to two weeks. Now if your just scratching really hard and getting that stuff under your nails it is just dead skin cells. As for dandruff that is something totally different. It usually looks like you have cradle cap the skin peals off in big chunks and dandruff is contagous. If that is what you think you have you should see a dermatologist. If you use something like head and shoulders it doesn't fix the problem it is just a temporary fix until you stop using it. I doubt that you have dandruff it is probably just product build up and if you have an oily scalp try changing shampoos that may help as well.

Yeah it is dandruff. How clean your head is doesn't make a difference because it is just dead dry skin. You can get it from not drinking enough, using too much hairspray, using too much shampoo, basically anything that will dry out your scalp. Its not dirty at all unless you are the dirty type.

Just use a dandruff shampo which will clear it up just like using lotion on your skin elsewhere on your body when you have dry skin.

Its no big deal. Everyone gets it now and then especially when it is hot and dry out.

It /is/ dandruff which /is/ dead skin. Your entire outer layer of skin is dead. Just because it comes out under your fingernails when you scratch your head does /not/ mean you have a problem. It is normal for this to happen on everyone, and unless you see flakes in your hair you shouldn't worry about it. It is possible that there is some shampoo and conditioner left in your hair, but that's not what you are seeing unless you didn't rinse your hair, in that case yes, I'd be worried. Also if you are one of those people who uses alot of hair products, that could contribute too. Most likely though, it's just dead skin.

It can be either two things. One, drandruff or two a dry scalp. With dandruff you need to use medicated shampoo such as Selson Blue. With a dry scalp you cold be washing your hair to often and removing the essential natural oils that prevents a dry scalp.

Dry scalp.Even though you wash it every day it isn't going to help. Try not to wash your hair everyday. It is not good for your hair that is a lot of product on your hair. When you wash it though scrub your scalp really good it is probably just dry scalp

That is dandruff or you have psoriasis.
Psoriasis is worst then having dandruff. Sometimes that can be the gel you put in your hair that gives off that residue, but, really, that is dandruff.
find the best shampoo that works well (Shelsun's Blue, Nutrogena T-Gel) anything that has that active ingredient.

That doesn't happen to me? I wash my hair every other day and I've never had that happen to me? Maybe you need a clarifying shampoo to get rid of all that stuff on your scalp because that doesn't sound too sanitary. Try Neutrogena's Clarifying Shampoo. That's what I use...

R U joking! It is ok, it's danderuff. Just use a differrent shampoo. Also DO NOT
shampoo everyday it is not healthy and pests like lice prefer clean hair to live in. People with grease in thier hair get them too but it is less likely.
