That's definitely done with a brush. There is a coloured underpainting as well - experiment with colours on a small canvas first to get the right combination. Otherwise it will look like 3 separate bunches of colour... not the same feeling at all.

Depends on the size of your painting, or wall. Paint pads give a good, smooth finish. Mini rollers designed to use behind radiators are fun. And you can wrap rollers in string to change the finish.

Rothko used brushes, and his work is more sophisticated in both concept and executiuon than most people might think. Use his work as springboard into your own pool. Good Luck.

he didn't use rollers. look closely at his canvases, there are always brushstrokes.
